the event
From July 21-26, 2008, Salvador will host the
International Film and Audiovisual Seminar for the fourth time. This edition will welcome participants from diverse countries, such as film professionals, producers, distributors and theorists, as well as the general pubic.
SEMCINE IV will proudly feature a variety of events such as roundtable sessions, workshops, meetings with producers and distributors, as well as film and video presentations.
Past editions of the Seminar have showcased enthusiastic public participation, with highlights including noteworthy wide-ranging theoretical discussions. Seminar participants have included filmmakers and film theorists of international stature, for example Costa Gavras (Greece-France), Miguel Littin (Chile), Nelson Pereira dos Santos (Brazil), Robert Stam (New York University) and Michel Marie (Sorbonne), among many others. Previous editions have contemplated topics such as “Neo-Realism and New Cinema,” “Image and Digital Media,” “Cinema and Multiculturalism,” and “TV: the Globalization of Language.” The event has also featured several film premieres such as “Le Couperet” and “A Scanner Darkly,” shown here for the first time in Brazil.
In 2008, the Seminar will expand and diversify its offerings. In partnership with the Festival des 3 Continents de Nantes, SEMCINE is proud to present
Produire au Sud/Salvador, a workshop whose purpose is to develop Brazilian feature-length film projects intended for international film markets.
This edition of the
Conference of Film and Television Producers and Distributors will welcome television professionals in an attempt to foster free exchange and increased business opportunities.
This year the festival will be held in several auditoriums and areas throughout the Castro Alves Theater, one of the most important theaters in Brazil. Besides the
International Film Screening featuring Brazilian premieres of films from all over the world accompanied by the directors themselves, and the
Short Film Screening with its accompanying award given to the best short film produced in Brazil, we are introducing two additional sessions: a
Retrospective Film Screening, showing the most important films from one of contemporary cinema’s icons. In the
Multimedia Lounge, a variety of activities will take place including music videos, video-art presentations, videogames and animated films, as well as performances, photographic exhibitions and book signings.
The
International Film and Audiovisual Seminar is designed with cultural exchange in mind, featuring discussions and reflections on the creation, production, circulation and consumption of audiovisual material. The Seminar is the product of a partnership between the Federal University of the State of Bahia, VPC Cinemavídeo, The Audiovisual Center of Bahia-Trapiche Barnabé and Ondina Filmes, with assistance provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture.
